Who it suits

Senior citizen tours

Shimla, Dalhousie and Kashmir suit senior travellers, because they stay below 2,700 metres and the sightseeing can be done without long walks. Ladakh, Spiti and the Kedarnath trek are not advisable without medical clearance, since all three involve sustained altitude or sustained climbing.

The hotel matters more than the itinerary

Many hill hotels are built into slopes and reached by flights of steps, sometimes from the road. Booking for lift access and a level approach is the single most useful adjustment for older travellers, and it has to be asked for explicitly.

The yatras

Char Dham and Adi Kailash are frequently taken by older pilgrims, and they involve real altitude and long days. Helicopter options exist for Kedarnath. Medical advice before booking is the sensible course rather than a formality.

Questions people ask

Is Ladakh safe for senior citizens?

It carries real risk without medical clearance. Leh is at 3,500 m and the main sights are higher. Anyone with cardiac or respiratory conditions should take advice before booking.
