A road through the Himalayan foothills

Travel guides

When to go, and 60 guides to the Indian Himalayas — where to go, how to get there, and what nobody tells you until you arrive.

Before you book

Three seasons, three different trips

Himachal is beautiful throughout the year, but not in the same way twice.

March to June

Pleasant weather for sightseeing

The busiest window and the easiest one. Every road is open, the hill stations are at their best, and the hotels fill early.

  • Book two to four weeks ahead
  • Pack light wool for the evenings
  • Expect crowds at Shimla and Manali

July to September

Lush green landscapes

The lower hills turn green and slippery. Spiti and Ladakh sit in the rain shadow and stay clear, which makes this their season rather than Manali’s.

  • Best window for Spiti and Ladakh
  • Check landslide advisories daily
  • Carry a proper shell jacket

October to February

Snowfall, honeymoons and winter holidays

Real snow from late December across Shimla, Manali, Solang and Dalhousie. The high passes into Spiti close, and Gulmarg opens for skiing.

  • Down jacket, thermals and gloves
  • Ask for snow chains on the Solang run
  • Book one to two months ahead for New Year
