Best time to visit Dharamshala

March to June and September to November are the two good windows for Dharamshala. Dharamshala sits directly below the Dhauladhar and catches heavy monsoon rain from July to August — among the highest in Himachal — which makes the Triund trail difficult and the views largely absent.

Why the monsoon matters more here

The Dhauladhar rises abruptly from the plains directly behind McLeodganj, forcing monsoon cloud up and dumping exceptional rainfall on the town. July and August are wetter here than in most of Himachal, and the mountain wall that is the whole point of the view disappears for weeks.

Questions people ask

Is Dharamshala worth visiting in the monsoon?

Only if you want the atmosphere rather than the mountains. Rainfall is among the heaviest in Himachal in July and August, Triund becomes slippery and unpleasant, and the Dhauladhar is usually hidden.
