Season guide
Best time to visit Himachal Pradesh
March to June is the main season in Himachal, with clear weather and open passes. Late December to February brings snow to Shimla, Manali and Dalhousie. July to mid-September is monsoon, when landslides close hill roads without warning — it is the one window worth avoiding for a road-based trip.

March to June
The season everything is built around. Rhododendron in March, comfortable days through April and May, and the high passes opening from late May. It is also when Shimla and Manali are busiest and hotel rates are highest, so booking ahead matters more than at any other time.
The monsoon problem
Himachal’s hill roads sit on steep, young slopes and July to mid-September brings closures and delays that no itinerary can plan around. The scenery is at its greenest and the prices at their lowest, but a road trip in that window carries real risk of losing a day.
October to November
Underrated. Clear air after the rain, sharp mountain views, thin crowds and lower rates. Nights get cold from late October and the high passes begin closing, so it suits Shimla, Manali and Dharamshala rather than Spiti or Ladakh.
Questions people ask
Which month has snow in Himachal?
January and February most reliably, with December possible but less certain. Snow falls at Kufri, Solang and above before it settles in the towns themselves.
Is it safe to visit Himachal during monsoon?
Towns are fine; the roads between them are the risk. Landslides and blockages are common from July to mid-September and can hold a vehicle for hours or a day. If you travel then, build slack into the itinerary.

- Best time to visit ShimlaMarch to June is Shimla’s main season, with pleasant days and full access to Kufri and Naldehra. January and February are the snow months. July to mid-September is monsoon and the least reliable window. October and November are clear, cold and quiet.
- Best time to visit ManaliMarch to June suits Manali for open roads and Solang activities, with Rohtang generally opening around May. December to February is snow season. The Atal Tunnel keeps Lahaul reachable through much of the winter, which is the main change to Manali’s seasons in recent years.
- Shimla travel guideShimla sits at about 2,200 metres in Himachal Pradesh and works as a year-round hill station, with snow between late December and February. Two to three days covers the Ridge, Mall Road, Christ Church, Kufri and Jakhoo temple. Most itineraries pair it with Manali rather than visiting alone.
- Snow trip packagesJanuary and February are the reliable snow months in Himachal and Kashmir. Kufri and Solang get snow before Shimla and Manali towns do, and Gulmarg is the most dependable of all because the gondola climbs to about 3,980 metres. December is possible but not guaranteed anywhere.
