Season guide

Best time to visit Shimla

March to June is Shimla’s main season, with pleasant days and full access to Kufri and Naldehra. January and February are the snow months. July to mid-September is monsoon and the least reliable window. October and November are clear, cold and quiet.

Summer, and why it is crowded

Shimla is the closest proper hill station to Delhi and Chandigarh, so April to June brings weekend traffic on top of holiday traffic. Mall Road in late May is a different place from Mall Road in October. Midweek stays are noticeably calmer.

Snow season

Snowfall usually arrives in January, with Kufri getting it before the town. Roads can close for a day after a heavy fall, so a snow trip needs a spare day rather than a tight connection out.

Questions people ask

When does it snow in Shimla?

Most reliably in January and February. December sometimes delivers, but not dependably enough to build a trip around.

Is May a good time for Shimla?

The weather is excellent and everything is open, but it is the busiest month of the year. Expect traffic on the approach and book hotels well ahead.
